Film Event: Battle Royale

This event has now passed.

Film: Battle Royale (バトル・ロワイアル)

When: Monday 26th March 2012 – 8.45pm

Where: The Tyneside Cinema (Directions)

As part of their Cult Classic specials, and because ‘The Hunger Games’ is out soon and has basically taken the plot and smothered in in Twilight, the Tyneside Cinema is going to be screening Battle Royale.

Released in the year 2000 Battle Royale was one of the key films in defining both ‘cool Japan’ and the so called ‘Asia Extreme’ movement. Adapted from the book of the same name and launched in tandem with the Manga of the same name, Battle Royale’s popularity has remained constant since it’s release 11 and 1/2 years ago. In Japan the film has just got the 3D retrofit treatment and over here in England a special edition Blu-Ray release has recently been released to the masses.

The film itself is by no means let down by the hype, but if you are familiar with ‘Lord of the Flies’ you know where the film is going, only with lots more gratuitous violence. Anyone who hasn’t seen the film should leap on the opportunity to view it for the first time on the big screen, anyone who has seen it needs no real convincing to watch it on the silver screen!
